The main cause of the Battle of Buxar of 1764 was that the Nawab of Bengal, Mir Qasim, wanted to assert his independence from the British. Since the Battle of Plassey, the British had severely exploited Bengal. The Nawab wanted to stop this exploitation and aligned with Shah Alam II, the Mughal emperor and Shuja-ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Awadh, to expel the British from Bengal.
