It is a type of granule, without apparent limiting membrane, that is observed in most, if not all, cyanobacteria. These granules are variable in size and shape, with diameters up to about 500 nm, and contain polypeptides of 25 — 100 kDa with a 1:1 arginine:aspar tic acid ratio. They are believed to act as a nitrogen reserve.
