Two masses of 10 kg and 20 kg respectively are connected by a massless spring as shown in fig. A force of 200 N acts on the 20 kg mass. At the instant shown the 10 kg mass has acceleration 12 m/s2 towards right. The acceleration of 20 kg mass at this instant is:-

a) 12 m/s2
b) 4 m/s2
c) 10 m/s2
d) Zero

Dear student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

As given the acceleration of the 10 kg mass is 12 m/s2so the spring force that would have been acting on the mass = F = ma or , F= 10×12 = 120 N in the right directionwhile same amount of spring force will act on the 20 kg mass in the left direction so the net force on the 20 kg mass in the right direction = 200-120 = 80Nhence the acceleration of 20 kg mass  = 80/20 = 4 m/s2
