To maintain justice and equality in our society, the government should provide incentives to lower class people. Explain the statement in favor and against of it.

Dear Student,

a. The concepts of Justice and equality are elusive in nature.
b. There have been a lot of debate with regard to providing incentives to lower class people in order to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich and to maintain equality in the society.
c. It is in this context we have seen government providing reservation to the educationally and economically backward classes so as to maintain justice and equality in the society.

This has led to a political discourse among those who support such incentives and those who do not:

1.Our  Constitution apart from ensuring legal and political equality to all in the form of Universal adult franchise, abolishing untouchability also provides for a system of reservation which provides for  reservation of  seats in education and government employment for SC's and ST's .
2. .This system of providing special incentives has been an attempt to create a more egalitarian society
3. Since lower class were the groups which were historically discriminated and were victims of societal oppression, they need special privileges for their enhancement.
 4. In order to rectify the historical wrong reservation for instance, was introduced.
 5. Providing special incentives  are considered to be the  only corrective and defensive mechanism to protect minorities from the majorities.
 6. In order to allow them to show their capability it is an initial step taken on part of the government to integrate the lower caste groups in the mainstream.
 7. To enhance educational and economic status of the minorities.
8.We may also  give example of a system of
reserved constituency  that would ensure their participation and representation in the Parliament. It would also give them political voice and raise their democratic consciousness.
9. It would  prevent tyranny of majority.

However , there are political analyst who argue against the system of special treatment to the lower classes.

a. The system of reservation, or providing special incentive has been used to gain more political  browny points by the parties to expand their support base .
b.
It has been considered more as a political necessity by the parties to continue with this system rather than social or economic necessity.
c. Also  the  fact that  the policy of reservation has created demands for further reservation by other minority communities, we may give example of demands by gujjars etc.
d. It is also argued that as long as the  system of reservation exist, people will be constantly reminded of their caste based identities.

e.. They argue that   promoting education, greater awareness among the people, even increased urbanisation,  generating employment will enable people to become more progressive  and enhance their status.
