The School Boy

-William Blake

The poem is about a school boy whose happiness and freedom is marred by attending school that has uninteresting lessons. He feels caged and wilted in the stifling school environment.

The first person narrative starts with the poet feeling happy to rise in the summer morning to the sounds of birds chirping. He can hear a hunter sounding his horn. The melodious skylark sings with him. This is great company for the little boy.

His mood changes to sorrowful wailing as he has to attend school. He complains that the little children are sad as they have to spend the whole day under the gaze of an outdated, authoritative teacher. They sigh in disappointment.

He himself sits bored through the dull, lifeless lectures for hours. He neither takes interest in his books nor enjoys spending time in the school which is supposed to be the dwelling of learning. He is tired by the continuous, depressing lectures and classes.

He then compares a fearful child sitting in the school to a bird who is caged. Just as a bird born for freedom can’t sing when it is held captive, a child cannot progress in a stifling classroom. He would have no choice but to wilt and forget his youthful nature.

He uses another analogy from nature to explain to his parents that if buds are destroyed, flowers are blown away and plants are not nourished properly then they are sure to wither and die. Similarly, if the children are kept away from happiness and carefree joy in their spring or childhood, they cannot produce fruitful result in the summer or their youth. A dull school with an uninspiring routine ‘strips’ them of  joy.
