the pitcher plant and venus flytrap are green plants that can photosynthesize.why do they need to feed on insects
the pitcher plant and the venus flytrap are green and can photosynthsize but they remain with some deficiency of nutrients. So to fullfill this deficiency they feed on insects.

It is correct thatpitcher plantsare green in colour as they have chlorophyll and so can photosynthesize. But these types of plants grow in nitrogen deficient soil ( such asswamps or bog areas) unlike other plants. So, to fulfill their nitrogen demand , they trap insects and eat their proteins and this is the reason they are called as insectivorous plants.Pitcher plant can live without insects also but it would be healthier if traps and digests insects. So, Insectivorous plants are partially autotrophic and partially heterotrophic.

- Autotrophs- the plants which follow autotrophic mode of nutrition.
- Autotrophic Mode of Nutrition - The plants which can perform photosynthesis and make their own food by themselvesare called autotrophs and their mode of nutrition is known as Autotrophic Mode of Nutrition..
- Heterotrophic Mode of Nutrition - The plants which cannot prepare their own food and depend on other organisms for their survival are called heterotrophs and their mode of nutrition is called Heterotrophic Mode of Nutrition.
