Nitrogenase enzyme possesses many Fe-S cofactors (Iron sulphur cofactors) which are necessary for its enzymatic action and function. The binding of oxygen to the enzyme disrupts these cofactors and thus stops the enzymes activity. Hence, it requires anaerobic condition to function properly.
