The communist movement and Vietnamese nationalism means

Dear Student,


 1. Communist movement and Vietnam nationalism are distinct terms.
2. Nationalism, is a sense of belongingness towards a nation that drives individuals to transform their thoughts and ideas into organized deeds of collective action.  In Vietnam the feeling of nationalism is associated with anti colonial movement. In the process of their struggle against the colonial yoke people began to discover their own identity of belonging to one nation.
3. Vietnam nationalism would include the efforts made by the nationalist in the region to develop an sense consciousness among the people of Vietnam to fight against the French colonial regime.
4. The Nationalists in Vietnam were largely impacted by communist ideology which was an ideology propagated by Karl Marx, Mao Zedong who glorified violence , revolution to  bring about change.


It is in that context we may explain  how communist ideology influenced Vietnam's nationalists.


a. In the 20th century, Vietnamese nationalists were highly influenced by the success of communism in China . Ho Chi Minh, who was a great communist nationalist of Vietnam , based his freedom struggle against French on communism.

b. Developments in China also inspired Vietnamese nationalists. In 1911, the long established monarchy in China was overthrown by a popular movement under Sun 
Yat-sen, and a Republic was set up. These developments inspired , Vietnamese students to organize the Association for the Restoration of Vietnam (Viet-Nam Quan Phuc Hoi).

c. Ho chi Minh who was in control of the North Vietnam had established communist government there with the support of China.

d.On request by  Ho Chi Minh, China offered  military assistance to the Vietnamese forces fighting the French.

e.I n addition to the training and planning guidance by the logistical support from China began to increase steadily to Vietnam.

f. The Viet Minh trained guerillas to go to the south to spread the word of communism. Their weapons mostly came from communist China.
