Respected Principal, Teachers, members of the staff and fellow students !I am very happy to see all of you here today for the inauguration of the local School Garden which will be accomplished only after a tree planting ceremony. We have with us plenty of saplings that have been donated by you. I am here to speak on ‘Tree plantation’. You know how greatly beneficial trees are! They, in fact, sustain our lives. Just imagine, if they had not provided us with oxygen or with food, fuel, furniture, fruits, herbs, houses for birds, what kind of life it would have been? Well, there wouldn’t have been life at all.

Just planting the saplings and letting nature to take care of the rest will not help. It is our duty as good dedicated citizens to look after these saplings and water them. Besides this, trees cause rains which are as necessary as air. They give us a beautiful landscape and help in the ecological balance of nature. You can imagine the surface of the moon. Our earth would be like that without trees – lifeless, colourless, lustreless. We are here because of them. We must therefore start valuing them. In the past trees were planted by kings and nawabs on roads, around palaces and in gardens. In the modern times local governments have been planting them on roads and in parks. In the future people shall plant them almost everywhere on vacant spaces. Our disregard for trees has borne us with sour fruits. See the effects of deforestation and increasing urbanization. Environmental pollution is their result. Global warming, or the Green House effect have caused drought conditions in many parts of the world. Undoubtedly many states in our country are reeling under scanty rainfall. If we are really serious about the value of tree plantation due to these reasons, it becomes our urgent duty to plant more and more trees on every available inch of land. It is the need of the hour that something should be done to restrain the increasing environmental degradation by planting more trees and implementing various laws to check tree felling. If something is not done soon, the damage to our biosphere will be difficult to repair.

Introduction:

Without oxygen we cannot live for a moment even. Without oxygen, the animal world will  die away. Trees make the oxygen and spreads it in the air. While inhaling air we take the oxygen with it into our bodies and live in life.

Carbon dioxide makes our atmosphere or rather our environment poisonous for us. Trees consume this carbon dioxide and thereby makes our environment safe for us.

Trees also give us many other benefits. We get fruit and flowers from the trees. Trees provide us with fuel and timbers. In summer, they bear the scorching rays of the sun and give us cool shade under them. Trees in our forests draw the rain from the clouds floating in the sky. Trees in our forests check the quick flow of rain-water and thereby check the occurrence of high flood in our rivers. On the other hand, this slow process of water-flow gives us good water all throughout the year through streams and streamlets with their sweet melodious music.

Trees conserve our soil. This soil-conservation is very important for our corn-fields. Trees make own land fertile by their fallen leaves. By their fallen leaves they make new soil for us. Most of the forest-products are the products from the trees in the forests, absentee of trees will cause a lot of harm to us and to our life. So the number of trees should be multiplied by the tree-plantation by us.

We should plant trees near our houses and near our villages for a forestation with a view to raising new forests. We should plant trees on the two sides of the roads and paths and on the four sides of our corn-fields. We should plant trees on all the vacant places in our village on towns where we live, and we should advise all to do so.

Franklin D. Roosevelt rightly said, ?A nation that destroys its soils destroys
itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh
strength to our people. ? Trees are indispensable for life. Man can?t live
without trees.

However,the present condition of forests in the world,
especially developing countries is pathetic and miserable. Forests are the
source of life. They are the giving angels. They give man oxygen, rains, wood,
fruit, make the world look so beautiful, yet the sinister man kills them! Who
will be more inhumane than man himself? Cutting of forests ultimately endangers
man?s own existence.

Most of the world oxygen that the animal
species including man inhale is produced in the forests and tropical rainforests.
Forests and rainforests house millions of species of plants, animals and
insects. Even more importantly, they are home to many unique plants and
animals that do not exist anywhere else in the world.? If the tropical
rainforests were to be destroyed, so would the homes of all these species.
Without a home,?many of these species could become extinct.

Trees?are important to the environment;? they recycle water and process carbon dioxide
in the atmosphere through photosynthesis. They are the world's full-time purifiers
of air and water. Their cutting will disturb the natural water cycles which
will lead to the shortage of fresh-water in the water reserves of the
world.?

Cutting of trees will have a negative effect on the
environment. It will result in an increase in the amount of carbon and other
greenhouse gases in the environment. Burning of these forests will result in
the emission of a large amount of carbon dioxide into the air. Carbon dioxide
and other greenhouse gases like the oxides of nitrogen and methane are known to
trap atmospheric heat, thus increasing the average temperature of the Earth's
surface. This increase in the temperature near the Earth's surface and oceans
is termed as global warming.

Extreme weather conditions, changing agricultural production, and increase in
the disease carrying viruses are some of the other effects of global warming.
Deforestation is the primary reason behind global warming; we need to show greater
concern towards the cutting of trees on a large scale. We need to take quick
measures for preventing deforestation of the tropical forests so that we can hope
for an environment that is healthy to live in.

So, we see how crucial trees are for evolution and the
smooth running of all the life forms on the planet. They are indeed the
power-house of evolution. It is our bounden duty to plant and preserve trees
and forests as without them we can?t exist .
