With the help of one example for each, distinguish between the acquired traits and the inherited traits. Why are the traits / experiences acquired during the entire lifetime of an individual not inherited in the next generation ? Explain the reason of this fact with an example.

Dear Student,

Difference between acquired traits and inherited traits

Acquired traits Inherited traits
  • These traits are developed during the lifetime of an individual.
These traits are developed due to the transfer of genetic material from parents to their offsprings.
  • It involves a change in non-reproductive cells,i.e., somatic cells.
It involves changes in reproductive cells,i.e., germ cells.
  • These traits are non-heritable. This means that they can not be passed to the next generation.
These traits are heritable in nature. This means that they can be passed to the next generation.
  • Example: a) Suppose if you cut your finger by an accident, your offspring will come with all fingers. b) taillessness in mice
Example: eye colour, height, etc.

Acquired characters are not inherited in the next generation because only those characters are transmitted or inherited from parents to offsprings which are present within genes. The gene is the functional unit of DNA. Proteins control the characteristics through the expression of DNA. Acquired characters do not cause any change in genetic makeup of an organism.

The traits of experiences aquired during the whole life time cannot be tranferred to the next generation as it does not cause any change in the dna of the germ cell of the organism.

Acquired traits are not formed as protein in DNA or gene , they are acquired due to practise and may be lost if proper practise is not done . Inherited traits are formed as DNA in cell from parents .  These traits are only inherited in next gen.
  • 2
Traits acquired during lifetime do not pass on to next generations because they do not cause any change in DNA of an individual. Only the traits inherited in DNA passes to next generation as DNA is carrier of heredity information.
Example- Cut tails of mice and leave them for breeding with each other. You will observe that their progeny will have tail as it is an inherited trait. No mouse will be without tail.

Hope it helps...
