1. Awadh refers to the region in the centre of present day Uttar Pradesh. Before 1857, Awadh was an independent kingdom ruled by the Nawabs from the capital city of Lucknow. In 1857, Awadh was annexed by the British due to its great economic and political importance.

Economically, Awadh was located in the Doab, the fertile plain between the  Ganges  and the  Yamuna  rivers. Hence, it was agriculturally very prosperous and could yield a lot of revenue for the British. It also had valuable forest and grazing grounds in the foothills of the Himalayas which was economically valuable.

Politically, Awadh was a very significant region. It was at the centre of north India and control of it could complete the British dominance over all of North India from Calcutta to Delhi.
