Dear student,

The answers are as follows:
  1. Mr. Otis is an honest man and considers the jewels that Miss Virginia had received from the Ghost to be the family heirlooms of Lord Canterville. In the long speech that he gives Lord Canterville regarding the lack of importance of jewels for young girl reflects his Puritan beliefs. However, the speech itself is quite comical, It makes Lord Canterville smile, which he camouflages by pulling his moustache frequently. He then refuses to accept the jewels stating that Mr. Otis had take the house at its valuation. Since he and his family were unaware of the existence of the jewels, they rightfully belonged to Miss Virginia. Moreover, he did not wish to incur the wrath of the Ghost by taking the Jewels from her. This reflects the fact that Lord Canterville too is an honest man and at the same time has strong traditional beliefs. The two characters are honest, the only difference being one is modern and the other traditional.
  2. Sir Simon belonged to the upper tier of the social hierarchy in Britain. No matter what he might have done when alive or even in that go-between zone, the British would not have anything short of a stately funeral to honour their time-old traditions. The old world was confronting the modern world of rationality and thought, society was changing already so it becomes imperative to hold on to the last vestiges of tradition. The funeral procession was wonderfully impressive, attended by Lord Canterville as the chief mourner having come up especially from Wales. From the procession to the attendees and the service, nothing had been spared in order to organize a stately funeral for Sir Simon, in strict observance of all the traditional customs and rituals. In a way, it can be read as laying to rest the old world ideas and beliefs, bidding adieu to the past with the due honour it deserves in order to welcome the new.
