Muni's wife is just two years younger than him, which means she is an old lady too in her late sixties. She has assumed the responsibility to take care of Muni so that the old man remains alive. She is quite hardworking and earns money by scrubbing floors, grinding corner sweeping in the big house. She does this on days when Muni is not able to get anything to eat. She arranges the food for him and does the entire work of the household. Though the narrator tells us that Muni's wife now has an upper hand in their household, her condition earlier was not the same. This shows the subjugated position of women in the village. She has suffered thrashing and beating at the hands of her husband and is a victim of child marriage too.
