Brief importance of the technology

This technology will enhance/ intensify the production of genetically superior breeds of goats through multiple ovulation – embryo transfer and embryo cryopreservation (MOET-EC) and related reproductive biotechniques.

Major features/components

Embryo transfer (ET) is a biotechnology tool that will fastrack the production of genetically superior goats. It produces more offsprings within a shorter period of time. Production of 30 offsprings is possible compared to the existing production of only 2 offsprings per year.

Comparison of offsprings produced through traditional production and embryo transfer:

It reduces importation cost from PhP40, 000 to PhP10, 000 and prevents transfer of imported diseases to the country.

The total project cost is PhP2, 888, 553. It is expected that during the initial stage of the project, investment is high due to the expensive cost of equipment. However, on the succeeding years higher income will be derived from sales of quality offsprings produced.

Technical Requirements

Ten genetically superior, normally cycling and clinically healthy does of the CLSU Small Ruminant Center will be used as donor animals. Recipient animals to be used should be normally cycling, clinically healthy and have had kidded. Grasses and legumes will be fed ad libitum to the animals. Concentrate supplementation at the rate of 200 g per animal per day will also be given for both donor and recipient animals. The usual health and other management practices in the center will be followed.

Collection of Embryos

Local and/or General anesthesia will be used in the flank incision technique of exposing the uterus. Following exposure, the foley catheter will be passed in the cervix and locating the tip of the catheter 2 to 3 cm of the external bifurcation of the uterus. Dulbeccos phosphate buffered saline or lactated ringers solution supplemented with 10 % goat serum and antibiotics will be used as flushing medium. Recovered flushing medium will then be searched for embryos under a stereomicroscope. Morula to blastula stage embryos will be used for transfer or cryopreservation.

Embryo Transfer (ET)

The same flank incision technique will be used to expose the uterus of the recipient does. AI catheter will be used to lodge the embryos on the uterine horn of the recipient animals,

The success of the technique will be based on the non-occurrence of heat of the succeeding cycle of the recipient does.

The does treated with gonadotropic hormone to induce multiple ovulations but not collected will be observed and monitored until their kidding time.

Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer (MOET) Technology

Cow is administered with FSH-like hormone, which induces follicular maturity and super ovulation.

In super ovulation, instead of one egg/cycle, 6 ? 8 eggs are produced per cycle.

The?cow is either naturally mated with a superior bull or artificially inseminated.

Fertilized egg is recovered at 8 ? 32 cell stages non-surgically and transferred to a surrogate mother.

Using this technique, high milk-yielding breeds of females and lean meat-yielding bulls have been bred successfully.

MOET stands for Multiple ovulation Embryo Transfer Technology.

i) First a cow is admonistrated with FSH like activity which induces follicular maturation and multiple ovulation i.e. Instead of 1 egg 6-7 eggs are derived per cycle.

ii) This hormone increase the number of eggs in a normal ovulation cycle 6-7 .

iii) Then the is either mated with an elite bull or artificially inseminated by the sperm of an elite bull.an elite bull is that species which produce more number of offspring in a cross.

iii) Then the zygote starts division and at 8-32 cell stage they are derived.

iv) Then these fertilized eggs are transferred to the surrogate mothers for further development.

v) The genetic mother mother is now again ready for another cross.
