a. An important amendment which was made in the constitution of India in the year 1989, was the 61st Amendment, also referred as the The Constitution (Sixty-first Amendment) Act, 1989.
b. This amendment lowered the voting age for all citizens from 21 years to 18 years.
c. Thus according to this amendment , elections to both Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly would be based on universal adult franchise that is all citizens who are 18 and above would now on be entitled to vote irrespective of any discrimination on the basis of caste , creed, religion or sex.
d. This amendment certainly had a major impact as it increased the number of people who were to participate and cast their votes from then.
