1. The book Totto Chan is a memoir of the childhood experiences of the author in her school. It begins at a point when Totto Chan's mother realises that she needs to find a school where Totto Chan will be freer to speak her mind and do her will. Totto Chan had been expelled from her previous school which was a public institution. When Totto Chan's mother takes her to meet the headmaster of the new school, immediately Totto Chan is able to connect with Mr. Kobayashi as her teacher. In her new school, she makes a lot of friends and spends time learning new things. Mr. Kobayashi always has something new to offer to make the students curious to learn. He has a way with children and is indeed a great teacher. He looks after each pupil with care and remains concerned about the all-round development of differently-abled students. He regards all of his students as special and remarkable.
Totto Chan befriends a Christian boy who has polio. A fellow of Totto Chan did not Japanese since he was raised in America as a kid, instead of letting him feel like an outsider, Mr. Kobayashi asks the other students to learn English from him. The government has put restraints on English as "the enemy's tongue" however, the teacher is liberal in thoughts. He even is an acquaintance of politically prominent people in the country.
Totto Chan's years as a pupil at Tomoe Gakuen pass with happiness. World War II begins, but the children are unaware of the outer reality. Totto-Chan thinks of something amiss only through instances when she is not able to buy candies on her way to school and it becomes difficult for her mother to prepare a proper lunch. One of the parents removes their child, a boy from the school, and Mr. Kabayashi cannot help but console him and let him cry to his fill.
Totto Chan's happy school days come to an end when the school is bombed one day. The headmaster promises to build an even better building, however that is never accomplished.
