The partial pressure of oxygen (pO₂) is higher and the partial pressure of CO₂ (pCO₂) is lower in the alveoli while in the blood, the pCO₂ is greater than pO₂. Diffusion of fluids occurs from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. Hence, oxygen will move from the region of its higher concentration to the region of its lower concentration i.e., from the alveoli to the blood and CO₂ will move from the blood into the alveoli from where it is expelled out. This mechanism helps in respiration and exchange of gases.
