Some points on Adult Literacy
a. India has the highest number of illiterates.Hence, adult education programme has been launched to literate adults who have lost the opportunity to study and crossed the age of formal education.
b. The programmes for adult literacy has been launched since the First Five Year Plan and the National Literacy mission was the prominent one set up in 1988. It provides functional literacy to non- literates in the age group of 15-35.
c. National Literacy Mission has made 127.45 million persons literate covering 597 districts.
d. Some schemes launched by the government in the field of adult literacy are Saakshar Bharat and Scheme for Support to Voluntary Agencies for Adult Education and Skill Development.
