Ernest becomes an old, wise man

Ernest became an old man with white hair on his head, and lines and wrinkles on his face. But he had grown equally wiser and famous. He did not want fame but he was well known even outside the valley. Learned men visited from far and wide to meet Ernest and discuss profound thoughts. His face had a glow as he spoke with them of matters close to his heart.

Probability of the poet bearing resemblance to the Great Face

Another son of the valley had become a great poet. He spent his time in many distant cities and wrote lovely poems. He had written a poem about the Great Stone Face. Ernest read his poems after completing his usual work. He wondered if that poet could be the likeness of the Great Stone Face. He looked at the mountain that seemed to smile at him but gave him no answer.

Interaction between Ernest and the poet

The poet had heard of Ernests wisdom and good character. He wished to meet him and discover his way of simple living and high thinking. He visited Ernest on a summer day and found him reading a book while looking lovingly at the mountain.

The poet asked if Ernest would house him for the night. Ernest agreed readily, adding that the mountain too looked kindly at the traveller.

The poet and Ernest talked. The poet found Ernest to be honest, kind and noble. Ernest was impressed with the vibrant pictures painted by the poets mind. Ernest felt even the Great Stone Face paid attention to their talk. He enquired about the visitors identity and learned he was the poet whose book he had been reading. Ernest was disappointed that he could find absolutely no resemblance between the Great Stone Face and the poet. After reading his poems, Ernest had honestly thought the poet would fulfill the prophecy.

The poet agreed he had great thoughts but had not lived his life according to them. His actions had not been in harmony with his dreams. He was sad, as was Ernest.

Ernests customary address to the people of the valley

Ernest talked to his neighbours every evening and the poet accompanied him that day. People listened to Ernest as his words were powerful. They were true as they matched his thoughts. His thoughts corresponded with his actions. He practised what he preached. He had done good actions and had been kind and gentle in his duty. The poet was deeply moved by his words and felt Ernest was a truly great man. Ernests white hair outlined his soft, wise face.

Ernest fulfils the prophecy

In the evening light of the setting sun, white clouds covered parts of the Great Stone Face and looked like Ernests white hair. Ernests face had a majestic expression as he spoke to the people. The poet realised that Ernests face had close resemblance to the mountains features. He drew attention to this fact and the people too could clearly see the resemblance.

But the simple Ernest just walked back home with the poet. He still hoped to see a greater and wiser man than himself who would look like the Great Stone Face.
