The city of Kolkata is the capital of the state of West Bengal in the eastern part of the country, India. The large bustling metropolis was the former capital of British India and has retained the impressive colonial era architecture which is in sharp contrast to the sprawling urban slums an dynamic new town suburbs taking over the city. Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, emerged out of the merging of three villages, Kalikata, Gobindopur and Sutanuti, a task performed by Job Charnock, considered to be the founding father of the city. The main language spoken in the state is Bengali and those originally from the area are known as Bengalis as well. Known for its cultural, intellectual and culinary prowess, Kolkata has been in a state of suspension between the times old and new, straddling both with one foot in each. The river Hooghly flows by the city which used to make it one of the most important riverine ports that influenced the city's commerce and trade during the British era.
