Make sure that you are stroking the needle in the same direction so that it gets magnetised.

You can temporarily magnetize a steel needle, or any other material that contains iron, using a standard magnet. A magnet contains an invisible force field with a north and south pole that allows it to attract other iron-containing objects. Magnetizing allows you to create a current running from one end of the steel needle to the other.
