How did the development of synthetic indigo affect the English estate owner the Indian peasents?

In the Champaran district, most of the land was divided into large estates owned by Englishmen and worked by Indian tenants. 15 percent of the holdings of the lands were harvested by Indigo. When the landlords learned that Germany had developed synthetic indigo, they obtained agreements from the sharecroppers to pay them compensation for being released from the 15 percent arrangement. This was injustice to the sharecroppers.
