How can we identify the gender when we are converting a sentence from direct to reported speech?

For example: The chalk said, " I am talking."

In reported speech: The chalk said that he was talking.

The chalk could have also been a girl! How can we identify this???

When we are unaware of the gender of the noun or it applies to both genders, we use masculine gender. For e.g., Man evolved from the apes. Man is a masculine noun. However, here we are talking about both male and female people so we use the word man. Similarly, in the sentence-The criminal is very intelligent. He had plotted the crime very well.-We don't know who the criminal is. It could also be a girl. But here we will still use the wor d "he" which generally a masculine pronoun.
