 Oh, you didn't ask for average deviation, sorry. Sum of deviations on taking modulus is 2.5x6 = 15.

 Their mean is (3+4+6+7+8+14)/6 = 7

Sum of deviations, without taking modulus, is obviously zero. But for actual mean deviation from the value, [(7-3) + (7-4) + (7-7) + (8-7) + (14-7)]/6 = 5/2

So on average the variates deviate by 2.5

 Yes, as I mentioned, sum of deviations without the modulus is clearly zero; else it would contradict the law of averages (you can refer to the topic in wikipedia 'law of averages').
