Summary of The Blue Umbrella

Binya is the protagonist of The Blue Umbrella's Story. She once came across a remarkable bright blue silk umbrella. She gave a woman who had travelled from the city for a picnic her necklace, a leopard claw, and a vivid blue silk umbrella.
Everyone in the village wished they could own the umbrella because it was so stunning. Everywhere Binya went, she always had an umbrella with her. One more person had a strong desire for a stylish blue umbrella. Ram Bharosa, the owner of the shop, was an elderly man who was also the richest person in the community. Even though he made the argument that the umbrella wasn't appropriate for a young girl, Binya refused to sell. Binya barely managed to remove the umbrella because she was so attached to it.
Over time, the colour of the umbrella faded. Despite the fact that it was the best umbrella in the village. Ram's envy of the umbrella becomes an obsession, and he hires a boy from the next village named Rajaram to work at the shop. Rajaram tried to steal the umbrella for his master, but he was caught, and everyone in the village began to despise Ram for his actions. Ram's shop was no longer frequented. Ram was displeased with his actions.
Binya left the umbrella behind when she went to Ram's shop one day to buy candy. Ram Bharosa had the urge to keep the umbrella, but he decided against it. Outraged, he left the store and called Binya to ask her to return the item, but Binya claimed to have left it there specifically for him. Ram felt happy inside. Ram gave her a bear claw pendant a few days later.

Quotes of novel

She was always ready with her smile, and would willingly have lent it to anyone who was feeling unhappy.
She walked home through the darkening glade, singing of the stars; and the trees stood still and listened to her, and the mountains were glad.
Ram Bharosa says he will never forget the smile she gave him when she left the shop
The umbrella was like a flower, a great blue flower that had sprung up on the dry brown hillside

Review of the book

This brief and lighthearted book depicts life in a hill village in Garhwal, where everyday people achieve heroic status and others are given chances to atone for their transgressions.
This book demonstrates beautifully how we don't require material possessions to be happy. When we fall in love with something, it will eventually fade away. But a person's love for another person never ends.
