Hi

The answer to your question is as follows.

Not all forms of social differences lead to social division. It depends upon the social circumstances and the combination of social differences with other form of differences. E.g. combination of race and economic backwardness would constitute social difference leading to social division. However, it varies from place to place. While language or region may be a form of social difference leading to social division in one society, it may not occur in another society due to different prevailing conditions.

Hope this resolves your query.

Best Wishes.

Social difference does not necessarily lead to social division. This is because of the following reasons:
  • It depends on how people perceive their identities. For example if people look at their identities only on the basis of their caste and religion considerations it becomes difficult to reconcile their differences. On the flip side, if they think that their identities are multiple and complimentary with their national identity, the situation is easier to cope with since this helps people co-exist with each other.
  • Also, how political leaders raise the demands of any community. The demands of a particular group can be accommodated, if they are made within the framework of the Constitution and do not affect the vital interests of any other groups of the country.
  • Further, it depends on how the government reacts to demands of different groups.  If the rulers or the majority community are willing to share power and accommodate the reasonable demands of the minority community, social divisions can be reduced in the country.

1- Social differences divide similar people from one another, but they also unitell every different people. 2- Ex- Carlos and Smith were similar in one way and thus different from Norman who was white. 3- But they were also similar in other ways- they were all athletes who stood against racial discrimination.

Every social difference doesn't lead to social division. It depends on the existing circumstances and differences. Social differences become social division when one ota more kinds of social difference becomes more important than the other and they overlap. Many times they crosscut one another bit that id not much harmful. It means that groups that share a common interest in one issue are likely to be in different sides in a different issue.

i) People belonging to different social groups share differences and similarities cutting across the boundaries of their groups. Carlos and Smith were similar in one way (both were African- American) and thus different from Norman who was white. But they were also all similar in other ways- they were all athletes who stood against racial discrimination. (ii) Cross-cutting social differences are easier to accommodate. For example, Catholics and Protestants had no conflict in Netherland through the people were divided. (iii) In Netherlands, class and religion tend to cut-cross each other. Catholics and Protestants are about equally likely to be poor or rich. The result is that Catholics and Protestants have had conflicts. Suggestions: (i) Principle of power sharing should be followed. (ii) Reservation of seats in the legislature, executive and judiciary for the depressed classes.
