The only difference between the structures of alpha and beta-glucose is the direction of the -H and -OH groups on the first carbon atom. In alpha-glucose –OH is pointing down wards and –H pointing upwards while in beta-glucose –H is pointing down wards and –OH pointing upwards. Alpha-glucose is the monomer unit of starch and beta-glucose is the monomer unit of cellulose.
