DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE NAGARA AND DRAVIDA STYLES OF TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE

Nagara style Dravida style
a. Nagara style temples existed in the Northern India and were known for their sikharas ( elevated structures), on which the main temple was placed.
 
Dravidan style temples are found in South India, and have elaborate gateways.
 
b. These temples are generally quadrangle in shape, with projections in the centre.These temples have fine sculptures on their walls.
 
These are basically pyramid shaped towers gradually progressing through small stroyes with dome at the top. Mainly made of sandstone, granite , they have wells or temple tanks.
c. We may give example of temples of Khujarao, in Madhya Pradesh. We may give example of sun temples, temples of Madhurai, Kanchipuram etc.
