The three types of towns during the mediaeval period were temple town, administrative centre and commercial towns.

1. Temple towns grew around huge temple complexes. They organised various cultural festivals and occasions which attracted many people from nearby areas.employment opportunities developed in and around the towns.

2. The town that grew as the capital of the kingdom and encompassed the offices and meeting places of the king was the administrative town.It dealt with all administrative functions related to ruling and managing the affairs of the people.

3.Commercial towns were associated with trading and exporting goods.Various items were traded and new trading centres emerged. Goods were trading by land and sea routes.

All the three towns have their respective functions to perform.
