Development of zygote depends on the type of life cycle of the organism and the environment it is exposed to, such as in fungi and algae, a thick wall resistant to desiccation and damage surrounds zygote. Zygote divides by meiosis to form haploid spores which further develop into haploid individuals in  organisms with haplontic life cycle. In diplontic life cycle. zygote divides by mitosis first forming a diploid embryo which then develops diploid individual.
