Some steps taken by the Government of India to protect forests and wildlife are
1. Legislative measures: Government has banned commercial activities in forests, including mining and logging. Even small scale activities like grazing cattle and gathering firewood is severely restricted in protected forests. Any form of hunting in protected forests is strictly banned. Hunting of protected animal species is also banned. In 1972, India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act and Project Tiger to safeguard the habitats of endangered wildlife species.
2. Setting up reserves: The government has set up 537 wildlife sanctuaries of which 50 are tiger reserves. There are 103 national parks which have been set up under various legislative measures.
