define transmission media

Dear student,

Guided Transmission Medium

Guided transmission media is also known as bounded media or wired media. They comprise cables or wires through which data is transmitted. The signals travelling through this media is bounded by the physical limits of the medium.

The popular guided media are −

  • Twisted pair cable
  • Coaxial cable
  • Power lines
  • Fiber optics

Unguided Transmission Medium

Unguided transmission media is known as wireless media. These media are limited by geographical boundaries.

Unguided signals travels in three ways −

  • Ground propagation
  • Sky propagation
  • Line – of – sight propagation

The common unguided transmissions are −

  • Radio transmission
  • Microwave transmission
  • Infrared transmission
  • Light transmission

There are two types of transmission media:
1) guided
2) unguided
Guided contains-

  • Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
  • Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
  • Coaxial Cable
  • Optical Fiber
  • hub

Unguided Media contains-

  • Radio Transmission
  • Microwave
AM radio transmitters can transmit audio frequencies up to 15 kHz

Microwave operate between 300 MHz to 300 GHz Bandwidth.
