Social stratification refers to the categorisation or division of the society into various layers or stratus It includes hierarchical division of social groups on the basis of class or caste. It implies social inequality where some groups are placed in the superior position whereas some are considered as inferior. This differentiation is made on the basis of some commonly accepted basis of valuation in a hierarchy of status levels based upon the inequality of social positions.The Indian Caste system is a living example of stratification system.
