Define : (i) cardinal points and (ii) scale of a map ?

a. Scales are used to calculate distance between the places on maps. It is the ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance shown on the map.

b Directions like North, South, East, west are the cardinal points which help you to locate any place accurately. Along with these cardinal points there are intermediate points like South west, north east which gives you more precise location of the place.

c. There are certain conventional symbols which are the result of international agreement and are indeed used to depict roads,buildings, water bodies, trees , grass etc. They ensure grater understanding of these different features on the maps.

The direction - NORTH , EAST , WEST , SOUTH . These are called cardinal points

There are two types of scale of map-

1. Small scale map

2. Large scale map

Small scale map -When a large area like - cotienents and countries are shown on paper then we use a small scale map

Large scale map - When a small area like - your village and town are shown on paper then we use a large scale map.
