No,Gayatri, the answer given by you is incorrect.This is because in the first sentence as you can see,it is a report given to someone that somebody else asked him why he was late for school.The '?' symbol represents a question.

In this sentence, someone is not asking a question, but is telling that someone asked him a question which will be written as a simple sentence which ends with a full stop.
