Both Australia (continent Australia) and Greenland (Continent North America) are islands and Australia is bigger then Greenland but why Greenland is considered as the largest Island yet????????

Dear Student,
1.Greenland the world’s largest island but Australia gets to be the smallest continent. The main reason is all about the continental shelf and not the coastline–Greenland is connected to North America to the continental shelf while Australia has its own shelf.
2.First, there is a geological distinction. While Australia and most of Asia are situated on separate Tectonic plares, Greenland shares a tectonic plate with North America. Second, there is a biological distinction. While a large percentage of Australia’s plant and animal species can be found nowhere else in the world, fewer of Greenland’s species are unique. Third, there is an anthropological distinction. Aboriginal peopleare limited to Australia, while indigenous Greenlanders belong to a group of peoples found throughout the Arctic, including parts of Canada, the United States, and Russia.
