When there are more than two alternative contrasting characters which are controlled by more than two genes, the state is known as multiple allelism. For example, gene that express human blood group is governed by three alleles – IA, IB and IO.  Here IA codes for blood group A, IB codes for blood group B and IO codes for O blood group. The allele for O blood group (Io) is recessive. One allele from mother and one allele from father combines and determines the blood group.

The inheritance of the traits that are produced by the combined effect of many genes are called as polygenic inheritance. Polygenic trait is controlled by more than one pair of non allelic genes & shows a different types of phenotypes. For example: Skin colour of an organism is an example of polygenic inheritance.
