Phagocytosis refers to the process by which certain living cells called phagocytes engulf other cells, particles and even pathogens.
Phagocytosis process occurs when the cell tries to destroy foreign particles or pathogens such as bacteria or an infected cell by engulfing it in lytic enzymes. This process is also observed in single-celled organisms such as amoeba during ingestion of food particles.

The process of phagocytosis occurs in four steps:
(i) Particle to be ingested is detected
(ii) Internalization process gets activated
(iii) A specialized vacuole called phagosome is formed
(iv) Phagosome gets matured.
