Plants prepare their food through the process of photosynthesis, which is the synthesis of glucose through carbondioxide and water with dissolved minerals from air and soil respectively in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll; as a waste product of the process, oxygen is produced, which is removed from the plant and returned to the air through stomata on the leaf. Since photosynthesis requires sunlight, it is fitting to say that plants give out oxygen in the day. During the night however, there is no photosynthesis in the absence of sunlight. Now the plant respires, taking in oxygen and giving out carbondioxide as waste in air through stomata. This is not to say that plants don't carry out respiration during the day. Therefore plants give out carbon dioxide in the night.

6CO2(aq) +12 H2O(l) ---sunlight/ chlorophyll-- C6H12O6(aq) + 6H2O(l) + 6O2(aq) { PHOTOSYNTHESIS(DAY)}

C6H12O6(aq)+6 H2O + 6O2(aq) ----6CO2(aq) +12 H2O(l) {RESPIRATION(DAY AND NIGHT)}
