A shopkeeper earns a profit of Rs 2 by selling one pen and incurs a loss of 50 paise per
pencil while selling pencils of her old stock. In a particular month she incurs a loss of Rs 10. In
this period, she sold 45 pens. How many pencils did she sell in this period?

Solution:

Profit made by selling one pen = Rs 2
Loss incurred by selling one pencil = 50 paise = Rs 0.5

In a given month, loss incurred = Rs 10
Number of pens sold during this period = 45
Let the number of pencils sold be x.

Thus, according to the question:
(45 × 2) + (x × -0.5) = -10
90 + (-0.5x) = -10
90 + 10 = 0.5x
100 ÷ 0.5 = x
x = 200

Number of pencils sold = 200
