A man can swim in still water at a speed of 3km/h . He wants to cross a river that flows at a speed of 2 km/h and reach a point directly opposite to the starting point.

1. In what direction should he try to swim ?

2. How much time will he take to cross the river if the river is 500 m wide ?

Width of the river = 500m

(1) sinA = 2/3

=> A  = 41.810

=> 90+41.81 = 131.810 with the direction of flow of river.

(2) time taken = width of river/(3 cosA)

=0.5/(3*cos41.810) = 13.42 minutes
