(a) Describe an activity to demonstrate the pattern of magnetic field lines around a straight conductor carrying current. (b) State the rule to find the direction of magnetic field associated with a current carrying conductor. (c) What is the shape of a current carrying conductor whose magnetic field pattern resembles that of a bar-magnet ?

Dear Student,

Solution to your asked query is provided below:

The direction of magnetic field line can be given by the right-hand thumb rule. According to this rule, if we imagine the linear wire conductor to be held in the grip of the right hand so that the thumb points in the direction of a current, then the curvature of the fingers around the conductor will represent the direction of magnetic field lines.
If the current flows from Y to X in the straight conductor, then the direction of magnetic field lines will be anticlockwise and if the current flows from X to Y in the straight conductor, then the direction of magnetic field lines will be clockwise.
