Let the present ages of father and son be F and S respectively.
According to the question,
5 years ago,
F – 5 = 7 (S – 5) … (1)
5 years hence,
F + 5 = 3 (S + 5) … (2)
Subtracting equation (1) from equation (2),
(F + 5) – (F – 5) = 3 (S + 5) – 7 (S – 5)
F + 5 – F + 5 = 3S + 15 – 7S + 35
10 = –4S + 50
4S = 50 – 10
4S = 40
S = 40 ÷ 4 = 10
By putting this value into equation (1),
F – 5 = 7 (10 – 5)
F – 5 = 7 × 5
F – 5 = 35
F = 35 + 5
F = 40
Present age of son = 10 years
Present age of father = 40 years

Age of Manoj after 12 years = (x + 12) years

Age of manoj 4 years ago = (x – 4) years

Given, Age of manoj after 12 years = 3 × Age of Manoj 4 years ago

∴ (x + 12 ) = 3 (x – 4)

⇒ x + 12 = 3x – 12

⇒ 2x = 24

⇒ x = 12

 

Thus, present age of manoj is 12 years.

Let the total marks be x.
Pass mark = 40% of x
Rupa gets 185 marks and fails by 15 marks.
∴ Pass mark = 185 + 15
⇒ 40% of x = 200
Thus, the total mark in the exam is 500.
